Experience Melbourne's Wine Regions
Since the 1800s, Yarra Valley wineries have been synonymous with the production of high quality wine. Located only 50 km from Melbourne, Australia, in the sweeping Dandenong Ranges, Yarra Valley is perfect for a weekend away, or even a day trip.
Over 100 wineries dot the region, producing mainly the major grape varieties like, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir, and of course, the Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc. However, there are a few special varieties to be discovered, and the best way to find them is to grab a wine map of the region and explore for yourself.
Yarra Valley has a rich history, from the boom-time of the 1800s to the economic downturn of the 1930s, when every vineyard in the region was turned into pastures. However, the wineries made their comeback in the 1960s and, since then, have won international awards and made the Yarra Valley a favourite Victorian tourist destination.
And they don't just do wine. Many wineries in Yara Valley now provide visitors with an experience beyond stopping in for some wine tasting. Many have restaurants, tours, produce stores and cellar door sales. And if you want to stay longer, some even provide tranquil holiday accommodation in the way of bed and breakfast, apartments or cabins.
For a chance to see the wineries at their best, and immerse yourself in delicious wine, food and music, visit during the annual Grape Grazing Festival. During this weekend, wineries show off their best, matching their wines to sumptuous meals, and the whole region comes out to party.
